I am a plant systematist with more than ten years of research experience specializing in the systematics and taxonomy of Andean–Amazonian orchids. My research lies at the intersection of classical taxonomy, phylogenetics, and genomics. In recent years, I have focused on unraveling the evolutionary history of Vanilla, one of the most widely recognized orchid genera worldwide. By combining dense taxon sampling with high-throughput sequencing approaches, I have clarified evolutionary relationships within the group, explored patterns of genomic discordance, and proposed a novel biogeographic framework for understanding its diversification across the Neotropics. Alongside my research, I am deeply committed to democratizing science and strengthening scientific capacity in local institutions, particularly in my home country of Peru. I have served as a lecturer in general botany and have mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students in taxonomy, systematics, and phylogenetics. As a citizen of one of the worlds greatest biodiversity hotspots, I view science, and botany in particular, as both a source of knowledge and a driver of sustainable development. This perspective underpins my scientific contributions, which include more than 45 peer-reviewed publications and a book on the diversity of Vanilla in Peru. Currently, I am leading efforts to produce the most comprehensive taxonomic catalog of Peruvian orchids to date. This project aims to provide a foundational reference for biodiversity research, conservation, and taxonomy in Peru and across the Andean region, contributing to the understanding of one of the most diverse yet still underexplored floras on Earth.
