ORTIZ OBLITAS PEDRO LUIS El Dr. Pedro Ortiz obtuvo su título de Médico Veterinario en 1984 y su PhD en la Universidad de Liverpool, Inglaterra, en 1998. Su especialidad es la Inmunología y actualmente es Profesor Principal en la Universidad Nacional de Cajamarca y Docente Investigador RENACYT, código P0000489, nivel II. Desde 1998 ha estado involucrado en proyectos sobre Fasciola hepatica, parásito que afecta tanto a animales como humanos, realizando investigaciones sobre epidemiología, diagnóstico, resistencia antihelmíntica, vacunas experimentales, residuos de antihelmínticos en alimentos, calidad farmacológica de antihelmínticos, identificación molecular de hospederos intermediarios. Actualmente participa como investigador asociado en un proyecto sobre marcadores moleculares de resistencia al Triclabendazol en Fasciola hepatica; así mismo en un proyecto denominado "Enfoque de Una Salud para estudiar la transmisión humana de F. hepatica e informar el control estratégico". Los resultados de las investigaciones del Dr. Ortiz han sido publicados en revistas científicas nacionales e internacionales y en congresos de su especialidad.

EN ESTA REGIÓN, EL CONTROL DE LA FASCIOLOSIS SE BASA PRINCIPALMENTE EN EL CONTROL FARMACOLÓGICO, SIENDO EL TCBZ UNA DE LAS DROGAS MÁS UTILIZADAS Y EFECTIVAS CONTRA EL PARÁSITO, LA CUAL SE VIENE UTILIZANDO POR MÁS DE 20 AÑOS CON MANIFESTACIONES DE RESISTENCIA ANTIHELMÍNTICA (KELLY, 2008), TAL COMO SE REPORTA EN OTROS LUGARES DEL MUNDO (FAIRWEATHER, 2005; ALVAREZ-SANCHEZ ET AL., 2006; BRENNAN ET AL. 2007). ES DEBIDO A ESTA EVIDENCIA QUE, EN EL CONTROL DE LA FASCIOLOSIS, ESTAMOS FRENTE A UN DILEMA, POR UN LADO ENFRENTAMOS EL INCREMENTO EN LA PREVALENCIA DE LA ENFERMEDAD Y POR OTRO LA DISMINUCIÓN EN LA EFICACIA DE LA PRINCIPAL DROGA FASCIOLICIDA QUE SE USA EN SU CONTROL. INFORMACIÓN RECIENTE DA A CONOCER DE UN CASO DE INFECCIÓN HUMANA CON F. 	DESIGN OF EFFECTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR LIVER FLUKE IN EUROPE	LIVER FLUKE DISEASE CAUSES ANNUAL LOSSES OVER 3 $US BILLION TO LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION AND THE FOOD INDUSTRY WORLDWIDE. THE PREVALENCE OF FASCIOLOSIS IS DRAMATICALLY INCREASING – IN RECENT YEARS FOR EXAMPLE INCREASES OF UP TO 12 FOLD HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN EU MEMBER STATES. IN THE UK THE PREVALENCE OF INFECTION IN CATTLE RANGES FROM 45% TO 84% AND IN IRELAND ALONE ANNUAL LOSSES HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED AT €60 MILLION. CONTROL OF THE DISEASE IN LIVESTOCK IS BASED IN THE USE OF ANTHELMINTIC DRUGS, WITH ACCOMPANYING RISKS OF CHEMICAL RESIDUES IN FOODSTUFFS; MOREOVER, ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE IS EMERGING AS A PROBLEM IN MANY AREAS OF EUROPE AND GLOBALLY. FASCIOLOSIS IS ALSO AN EMERGING HUMAN DISEASE IN MANY INCO COUNTRIES (AN ESTIMATED 17 MILLION PEOPLE ARE INFECTED). THE AIM OF THE DELIVER PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP NEW ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY METHODS FOR THE CONTROL OF LIVER FLUKE DISEASE IN LIVESTOCK, THEREBY MINIMISING THE USE OF ANTHELMINTIC DRUGS AND ENHANCING THE QUALITY AND SAFETY OF MEAT AND DAIRY PRODUCTS. THE PROJECT WILL INTEGRATE THE WORK OF 15 PARTNERS FROM 10 COUNTRIES. NOVEL CONTROL METHODS WILL BE DEVELOPED THROUGH 1) EPIDEMIOLOGY: DETERMINATION OF RISK FACTORS AND A PREDICTIVE MODEL FOR FASCIOLOSIS; STANDARDISATION OF IMPROVED DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS IN INTERMEDIATE HOSTS, LIVESTOCK AND HUMANS AND DETERMINATION OF GENETIC DIVERSITY OF EUROPEAN LIVER FLUKE POPULATIONS. 2) ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE: STANDARDISATION OF FIELD AND IN VITRO ASSAYS FOR DETECTING ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE AND MEASUREMENT OF TRICLABENDAZOLE RESISTANCE; DETERMINATION OF MECHANISMS OF DRUG ACTION AND RESISTANCE IN ORDER TO FORMULATE NEW STRATEGIES FOR CONSERVATION OF DRUG EFFICACIES. 3) IMMUNOPROPHYLAXIS: DEVELOPMENT OF PROTECTIVE VACCINES, EVALUATION OF THE IMMUNOMODULATORY IMPACT OF FASCIOLOSIS AND INVESTIGATION OF THE PROSPECTS OF BREEDING ANIMALS INNATELY RESISTANT TO INFECTION. 	VACCINES AGAINST HELMINTH INFECTIONS	LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY IS IMPAIRED BY HELMINTH INFECTION WHICH IS UBIQUITOUS IN CATTLE, SHEEP AND GOATS WORLD-WIDE. IT CAUSES SEVERELY DEBILITATING GASTRO-INTESTINAL, RESPIRATORY AND HEPATIC DISORDERS, DEPENDENT ON THE INFECTING SPECIES. THE TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF HELMINTH PARASITISM IN LIVESTOCK CONTINUES TO RELY ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY ON THE USE OF ANTHELMINTIC DRUGS, AN APPROACH THREATENED BY THE GLOBAL EMERGENCE OF ANTHELMINTIC RESISTANCE. AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH IS VACCINATION. MEMBERS OF THE PRESENT CONSORTIUM (FROM THE EU AND SWITZERLAND, NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA, NORTH AND SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRALIA, 2 SMES AND 1 MAJOR ANIMAL HEALTH COMPANY) HAVE DEVELOPED PROTOTYPE VACCINES WITH THE PREDICTED REQUIRED EFFICACY TO CONTROL MAJOR GASTRO-INTESTINAL NEMATODE INFECTIONS OF LIVESTOCK, NOTABLY OSTERTAGIA OSTERTAGI IN CATTLE AND HAEMONCHUS CONTORTUS IN SHEEP, THE LIVER FLUKE FASCIOLA HEPATICA IN SHEEP AND CATTLE WITH LEADING POSITIONS IN SUBUNIT VACCINE DEVELOPMENT AGAINST COOPERIA ONCHOPHORA, DICTYOCAULUS VIVIPARUS IN CATTLE AND THE TAPEWORM ECHINOCOCCUS GRANULOSUS IN DOGS. Proyectos de investigación	EFICACIA DEL TRATAMIENTO CON TRICLABENDAZOLE EN CASOS DE INFECCION HUMANA POR FASCIOLA HEPATICA EN CAJAMARCA, MEDIANTE PRUEBAS DE EFICACIA CLINICA Y CONTROLADA EN OVINOS (Ovis aries)	El presente proyecto tiene como objetivo determinar la eficacia del tratamiento con triclabendazole (TCBZ) humano (Egaten®) en infección humana por Fasciola hepatica. Se evaluará primero la eficacia clínica del TCBZ en veinte pacientes con infección comprobada, mediante un test de reducción del número de huevos en heces. Aquellos pacientes que no respondan al tratamiento, serán sometidos a un segundo tratamiento con el mismo producto. Luego se procederá a realizar prueba de eficacia absoluta.
